Biography:
John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, and his wife Lady Alice, were travelling around Africa by ship when the crew of the ship mutinied against the captain. The crew put Lord and Lady Greystoke off the ship with some provisions (rather than let some of the angrier mutineers kill them.) Building a cabin, they managed to survive a few years, during which time, their son, also named John, was born. Lady Alice died peacfully while her boy was still an infant. Her husband was not so lucky; he was killed by Kerchak, leader of a tribe of apes.

One of Kerchak's "harem," Kala, had recently lost her own child; she found the younger John Clayton, and adopted him. The apes called him Tarzan - "White Skin" in their language. Tarzan grew strong and agile. And smart. He taught himself to read English from children's books that he, at the time, hadn't fully reailsed were truly his. He befriend some of the animals, like Tantor, the elephant; and he bested others. A human, native to Africa, killed Kala. Tarzan sought bengance, but he learned more of this being who was in many ways more like himself.

He had his vengance, but from watching these natives he learned to wear a loincloth, and to use a bow and arrows. Tarzan became the lord of the jungle.

Later his cousin, William Clayton, and Professor and Jane Porter, when they are abandoned on the same beach Tarzan's parents had been left on. Tarzan would fall in love with Jane. Later he would meet Paul d'Arnot, who would teach Tarzan French. Eventually, Tarzan would learn English, be recognised as Lord Greystoke, marry Jane Porter, and have a son. And even after John Clayton III had grown to adulthood, and become "Korak," Tarzan would continue to have many adventures.
